As a Christian single, there is so much pressure to settle or compromise in pursuit of marriage. Some say that your standards are unreasonable and that you need to lower them if you want to get married in this age and time. How do we maintain our standards as a Christian single?
Our standards come from the core of who we are, our personal and spiritual value system. Standards form the basis for the important decisions that we make, like who we will enter a relationship with. Our standards direct our conduct and how we engage in different activities, including how we go about choosing a potential spouse and conduct ourselves during dating. Our standards set the boundaries by which we will operate and live our lives.
The standards for all Christian singles are not varied and diverse, but it is one and only one standard – God’s standard. Maintaining God’s standard means living according to His will, His Word, and His principles.
The Bible admonishes us in Romans 12:1-2:
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
It cautions us not to be conformed to this world: but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, that we may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Maintaining your godly standards and staying true to your boundaries will lead you to God’s best, and that is our ultimate desire. It is important to keep focused on what you want and what the Lord wants you to have, instead of wasting time on distractions.
If you do not know what values are important, it will be very easy to fall for the vices of the devil and to make poor decisions. One way to maintain your standards as a Christian single is to have an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. It is through this intimacy with Jesus that we will seek to imitate His ways. When we get close to Jesus, we see what He values and pick up what He values.
1 John 2:6 tells us:
He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
So, if we say we abide in Him, we should walk in the same manner as He walked. For us to be intimate with Christ and to imitate Him, we must first know Him on a personal level. We know Him by seeking Him through His word and through prayer and fasting. By doing that, we then will maintain His standards as a Christian single.
